We deal with three basic types of interpretation.

Also known as pause translation; this is used mainly in one-on-one meetings. The interpreter speaks when the speaker pauses between sentences. If a speaker’s remarks are lengthy, the interpreter makes notes, then reproduces the remarks or even an entire speech when the speaker has finished.

Simultaneous or “immediate” interpreting is delivered continuously. This type of interpretation is useful at multinational conferences and large meetings or seminars at which the interpreter is required to provide running translation as delegates speak. This is without doubt the type of interpreting requiring the highest order of skill, and it takes specialized training.
